A Good Captain
Redcoats were firing, cannons blew past,
I rallied my crew, as a good captain should.
They loaded those cannons ever so fast,
But not nearly as fast as the enemy could.
When I realized my situation was all but lost,
Another broadside ripped through the <i>Sea Wolfs</i> tender wood.
The call for abandon ship was a heavy cost,
But some sacrifices must be made, it was understood.
Standing at the helm, I gripped it with grim determination,
Pretending that the winds were fair and my ship whole.
Everyone knew that it would be my final station,
And so the decks emptied leaving nary a soul.
Down to Davy Jones locker, one last time,
This time for the last, because I'm saying goodbye.
While I might still be in my fit and prime,
A good captain goes down with the ship to die.

**If a shorter epitaph is needed, the very last stanza is the entry I am submitting. Although most epitaphs are very short (so they can fit on a tombstone) I decided to include the first part of the 'story' as it were.**
