Bottom line people: Do not trust anyone with any type of authoritive power what so ever right away.

I admit that I was a little off with my last post here.

From first hand experience with guild deleters, I'll give you my two cents...

People could seem very nice and friendly at first, and if they seem like the officer type, discuss said officer candidate with the other members of your guild; members, officer, Co-GMs, anyone in the guild who has observed the person's behavior well enough to give you a good opinion.

In some cases, the rouge member may have lots of people recommending his or her promotion, and in most cases, the GM would promote. And as soon as the GM and possibly Co-GMs are offline, the rouge attacks! There is no preventing that if one of your so called "good officers" suddenly turns on you. But there is a way to fix it. Urge as many guildmates as possible to join POF, a guild site, or any other site in which they can keep in touch should something like that happen. That way, the ejected guildies can always meet in game and re-guild.

Another thing to look out for are people who are too friendly at the second they join.

Example: *one second after joining* New Member (G): "Oh my!! This guild is sooo coool! I am never leaving!!! You people are AWESOME!!"

Yeah....it's obvious. A rouge would want the majority of the guild to trust and like them, so if they ever get promoted one day and eject the members, the GM would never suspect that it was the strangely over-friendly one.
People tend to be curious, shy, or unsure at first when joining a new guild. Anyone who is that friendly so soon are the ones to watch out for.

If a situation like that happens, I agree now that demoting is best, since officer status grants people the power to invite who ever they want.

And FYI, when this happened in PIC a few months ago, the joker didn't eject any members (thankfully).

Be careful about who you promote because you never know who you are promoting.
And always remember that a good guild never dies.
