"Time travel" is basically jumping between parallel universes (or timelines), thus when you jump back in time, you're creating a new timeline splitting the one timline into two timelines at the point you return to. So your grandfather would be alive in timeline 1, but you would've killed him in timeline 2 so you would never exist in timeline 2, but since you came from timeline 1, you should be alright as long as you return to the timeline you came from. You could even stay in timeline 2, but nobody would know who you were and you wouldn't be able to spy on yourself
