Were you able to EVER play pirates on this computer? It may be it's video hardware does not support the features required by Pirates Online.

Regarding Windows Update:
There is more than one way to address windows updates. Assuming you are in MSIE while here on the forums, click "Tools" and there should be an option for "Windows Update". Recommend that those using thier parents computers to play check with them before doing anything like this though. Parents do NOT like surprises.
