I might have missed some upgrades on all of my weapons if I didnt check each time I leveled each one of them up?

You have to plan? I'm clueless here, help me out please...

Im level 10 in sailing, and have unlocked the "full sail" for speed, the quick- turnabout thing and "open fire" command. Should I have only chosen 1 or 2 of those to upgrade? Can you give me some ideas on how to plan?
