The closest I got, was on FF; made it past "Preparing to set sail," then it got to a loading screen ("Building Navy forts..." etc.) and stayed there (38%) overnight while I slept. No other browser (on WinXP) has made it past "Preparing to Set Sail" though.

I have XP and can run it on Firefox. Still prefer the desktop launcher but the browser works for me.
