Yes, POBS has horrible glitches and a stale combat system, but what is more realistic; POBS, or POTCO; in which you can go onboard a flagship (filled with skeletons) and kill them all with one hit with desolation? Sorry if that offends you, I am a bit defensive over POBS, it used to be my favorite game.

Also, backgrounds might be good. Like being a former Navy officer, or an old EITC assassin, or being a voodoo witchdoctor. But allegiances? No, the game has enough player conflict already. POBS was in depth, but I doubt Panda3D could handle "in depth".
