There was a time when players actually raced around a race course on the designated island. Now they opted for something like the one above as written.

Based on what I saw last year, players are free to teleport to an island that has a totem. Players are not allowed to teleport onto another player's ship when required to sail to a wild island. Neither can they teleport to another player as a shortcut to finish the race faster.

It's really up to the Game Master whether to really enforce the rules or not. Some players were immediately booted from the game while others just got a pass because of who they are.
