Yes, I have done this too, however I notice it actually makes it tougher to take down an enemy ship!
 The reason being that instead of coming at you when you shoot at it . . . it tends to go away from you and you spend more time chasing it than shooting it!  I ended up sinking anyway because I lost track of time and timed out !!  :
