Well, it seems to make sense to me.
Sailors were often shanghied, that is kidnapped and forced into service. These were not likely a captains most trustworthy crew members. In those days, they'd just keelhaul'em or send'em for a swim with the fishes... Since we cant do that, we need to be more careful who we bring into the crew. Friends/Invite only
