I've noticed it you sail straight, you will eventually pick up speed, but as soon as you tack, you slow back down and have to wait a bit for the speed to return. I picked "full-sail" for my last upgrade, doesn't work nearly as well as staying on same course.
Broadsides work so much better this time around. I've been able to sink some Navy ships using just them. Don't be afraid to go after the level 11-13 sloops with your light sloop, especially if they are off by themselves. They go down pretty quickly with the broadsides, 6-7 acurate shots.
Gaining sailing exp is much easier now.
