Another method that is very effective with sloops of all sizes is the one described here This is my favorite. Not saying its the best, just my favorite.

The method Ed describes has the advantage of allowing you to get rep for cannons and sailing. Just remember that before the enemy is able to turn to broadside you take the helm and get in front of the enemy or in back, depending on which way your ship is pointed. If you get in front use this method . If you get behind, use the method I linked to in the previous paragraph. The most important thing, of course, is avoid broadsides!

Sinking even the biggest ships with the light sloop can and has been done. It may take forever ( weak broadsides) but it can be done.
