Plundering on a War Galleon is the best way to go,
But if ye have hearties that have maxed gold just kindly ask them for some  (Through poker)

Where you sail can make a difference in your plunder and your survival. If you are getting sunk by high level ships try to take on medium level ships. You may not get as much loot per trip but you will make it back to port with your loot. It may take a few more trips but have patience you can get there.
