Yes, some games allow you to select which keys (or controller buttons) perform what actions in the game. Potco does not.

Some controllers come with software so you can program the controllers buttons instead. So you can instruct the controller to simulate a keyboard function when pressing a controller button. Like setting a controller button to be the same as pressing the letter "r" for run. So you could press the controller button, and pirate runs.
