Another tip,
I find it easier to solo clear and board enemy ships if you take the people down first...
Basically it goes like this...
Attack until the circles come up, then get in close, man a cannon, and try and take down as many crew on the enemy ship as i can with the cannon and try not to damage it too much...
You can pretty much take the whole ship out crewwise if you aim just right it only takes 3 cannons to kill most lvl 8 guys, and a few rounds to kill higher..
After most of them are dead, I just make sure I leave one guy weakly walking around then solo swing over to clear him off...
Thats a tactic I use when I'm taking on higher level ships anyway.
