I put all my skill points in the combo with the spares in sweep. When I get high enough i will also max out the dagger skill that increases all cutlass and dagger damage by 25%. This will make a really powerful combo.

If you want rep than the more the skills you use the more rep you get. If your just after killing as fast as possible I did this:

1 hack
2 slash
3 cleave
4 flourish
5 thrust

3 sweep
3 brawl

5 bladestorm

I think that it depends on your playing style on where you want you skill points to go. Like for me, I have 5 skill points on endurance because more health is a plus for me. I do think however, only putting one skill point on everything until you max sort of takes the fun out of "enjoying the power" and variety associated with each weapon. Like with my second and third pirates, Stephen O'Malley and Aurum Lust, one is going to put all skill points to combat skills, while the other does only passive skills, because I want a feel for both. There's always retraining your weapon if you're unhappy, and all 4 of my pirates have 63,000+ gold, minus aurora with only 55,000; so I got a pretty penny with nothing to spend it on......

For the record though, here are Aurora's Cutlass Stats:
Hack: 1
Slash: 1
Cleave: 2
Flourish: 4
Stab: 5
Parry: 0
Endurance: 5
Sweep: 1
Brawl: 1
Taunt: 1
Bladestorm: 5

Just to explain the reasoning of putting 1 point on each.

It's all about pirate development. The more skill points on an skill the more damage it does, the more damage it does the fewer attacks you get on an enemy, the fewer attacks on an enemy, the fewer points you will get for defeating the enemy. The fewer points you get on an enemy, the harder it is to advance the pirate and weapon levels.

Its a balance of fun: fun from advancement vs fun from quick easy battles

Some would even say that by using fewer skill points its harder to do battle, however this game is one of the easiest I have ever played, can nearly do so in my sleep. I find it a challenge, therefore more fun, to use fewer skill points. Once mastered then use them.

There exceptions to that general 1 skill point rule. I always load up my passives that defend, speed up, or strengthen my pirate (I do not use ones that increase damage).

I agree with Zep. I save as many of my skill points as possible. 1 point in each attack, 2 maximum. Even broadsides only gets 2 points per side. I do use the passives that give me increased health, recovery rate, etc.

When Purvis reached level 40, he was still getting over 400 points per kill off of Tim Dartan. He had about 86 unspent skill points when he mastered all weapons.

I did the same with Lars, and he had 94 unspent skill points when he full mastered.

It lets you get the max rep for each kill, and it also means that you are reaching full master level with your skills at the equivalent level of of 14 or 15, not 25.

The downside is that you will have a harder time with each enemy. Higher possibility of losing and going to jail. I think there is more "Skill" in trying to master when your pirate is fighting at a level much lower than he is in reality.
