Free copies? Must be beta pre/release.
Computer vendors are offering "free upgrades" when the OS is released, but not offering any systems with the os on it as of yet.

Microsoft site says October is when they are scheduling its public release.

There is also a downside to using these releases.

They are usually "Time stamped" and only work for a period of time, as Microsoft expects the users to upgrade (likely for a fee) to the release version of the OS when it becomes available. Matter of fact, I quote this from Microsofts Windows 7 page regarding their current "Release Candidate"...

Watch the calendar. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you'll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. actually zep my dad works for a computer company so they buy stuff all the time and give it to there employees to use so my dad just lets it sit in his truck and im gonna try it out in my computer workshop next week.

If your the techie curious type that doesnt mind some troubles and tribulations along the way and have patience and the resources to address them then id say go for it.

However I do not want a volume of members to take such a venture lightly.

Having worked in the technical support field for 20 yrs, one of the most common mistakes are novice/basic computer users attempting advanced user alternatives like beta/rc operating systems, and applications. Usually due to them playing some game, and catching wind of such ideas from the more advanced users on their favorite gaming site. Almost always generating a need for assistance with something that already has limited support resources because its new. Just not something I would recommend for most. And if its your parents PC something you DEFINATELY must clear with them first.

No no no its not my parents pc, like i said my dad gets lots of free stuff. So we built a shop outside just for computer and have about 20 of them sitting on the wall. Were just waiting to find a day when its not 150 degrees up in the attic to go up there and fix the internet problem so we have internet access out in the shop. but i have so many computer to mess around with :P
