I know it combines several things, but 1 alligator does not a combat challenge make.

They are more than likely doing so to make this fair. If a level 10 pirate had to kill a high level boss.. wouldn't be that fair. Last year they did swamp gators as enemies, it was actually very well done that way.

It was pretty much a fiasco last year, with the same basic feats.
The "gator" part at the end being the worst part.
I had arrived waaaaay before anyone else only to find NO gators to slay. Another contestant just ran up to the GM and yelled "I finished" and was given first place.
The GMs weren't at all interested in hearing any protests.
Do I smell "repeat"?
