Two reasons: Lore, and Sense.
El Patron was supposedly a famed Spanish conquistador that traveled the Caribbean, collecting rare weapons to add to his collect. He favored four blades in particular: The Lost Sword of El Patron, which was his personal blade, and the three Cursed Blades that you find in the chest, which we often used in battle. The story goes that by defeating El Patron, you get access to his own weapon's of choice.
In the realm of common sense, like the others said, the quest is to unlock the Cursed Blades as a loot drop. It wouldn't make sense if you are rewarded a voodoo doll for a quest that unlocks a new type of sword.
