More on-topic, I'm very apathetic about this. I think this is just used to buy the developers extra time for creating new content.
I've always disliked that argument. "Because we're pirates." Sure, our characters are pirates in the game, but not the real players. I mean, if we all used the "We're pirates" excuse, I'd probably be out plundering, pillaging, and torturing some innocent townsfolk. As the player, in my opinion, we shouldn't be trying to take advantage of the system. It's dishonorable, you could say.

I'm not overly fond of the pointless competition either. It's buying them time by telling us to "vote for the best pirate", but the Caribbean is so scattered with various players that it's insanely difficult to garner votes for anyone without, as you say it, gaming the system. It's a nice little paradox we have here.

Keep in mind that this is a role-playing game. We ARE supposed to role-play as dishonorable people who ravage the Caribbean. And I'm not too sure what you mean by this:

Last I checked, all of us do this (maybe more to the Navy, EITC, and monsters than anything else, but I digress).

I agree Crest.
In fact, wasn't that the theme of the first movie.
To quote Will Turner after somebody said Jack Sparrow is a pirate..
"And a good man!" and something about men in this world
wearing two pairs of boots. And wasn't it Bootstrap Bill who
tried to do the "unpirate" thing of stopping the mutiny of Sparrow?
The point is yes we are pirates, but that doesn't mean we can't
do things right once and a while.
