Well all the examples you cited involved sword, which I believe to be one of if not the worst weapon in the game, so that doesn't sway me much. But the differing amounts of damage can probably be explained by skill sets. The voodoo user's attacks had more skill points invested in them than the sword combos, most likely. With voodoo attacks, people doing more damage than you probably have poured 5 skill points into Spirit Mastery, Blade Instinct etc.

I was involving sword because it was the only mastered weapon that I and the others had at the time. I could probably compare all the other weapons with the 'stronger' one and it would still come out on top - I didn't mention that I did compare all other weapons with my pirate's gun, and the gun was stronger. This may be just skill-based.

This is true, but as I mentioned near the end of my post, I tend to put all my damage-based skills on first, while I expect at least one of the players I mentioned does it differently. I think if I searched around a bit, I could find some more examples of my theory.

You give a valid point, though. Perhaps it is all skill point based.
