With Cannon Defense, gaining levels is different. You gain them as you go through the waves, and as a result they are quicker to get. You lose all your CD levels when you leave or lose, but you can gain them again from the beginning the next time you play CD.

The higher your general cannon skill level, the easier CD will be for you.

As we haven't had a screenshot in this thread for quite a few posts now, have a gander at this old photo I unearthed of Mayhem as Swashbuckler. To be honest, I haven't really come much farther than that! This screenshot must have been taken during the new year's fireworks in 2010. Quite fitting for the current occasion!
