Any tips for starting crews?

you can take over your own ships wheel at any time,

just go up to it and hit shift, will kick who ever is steering off the wheel.

what i wish for though is an option to turn crews off..least temporarily, as well as friend requests, as i really dont like unwanted invites from either.
