As you said, you created the account with your 9 y/o in play. You have what we call "Child chat" turned on. It limits a lot of what can be said. You might want to check his pirate to make sure you didnt disable his "child chat". Most of us will look for that + sign in a whisper to see if they are a child or adult. No plus, also allows more things to come his way. He will be able to see all local chat!

Thanks Angel.

That's what i figured out, since it is my childs account that has unlimited access, we both always signed in under his name, etc. Now when he plays he continues to sign in under his name (no plus sign for chat). When i play, i sign in under my adult account (basic), then access my pirate on his account (unlimited) and i have the plus sign in my chat. I didn't realize i could do that until yesterday. I now know it was an easy fix and probably a stupid question.

Can you explain this a bit more. I was going to start another thread asking about the Parental Controls. But you allude to something I was going to ask about. So I might as well ask here.

My daughter's account is linked to mine and I've turned on the parental controls. This means that she can only say things that are in the list of child approved words (forget what this is called). But my concern was that she would still be able to read what an unrestricted character is saying. Is that true? Or does it filter that for her as well (that'd be great).

Also, does anyone know if you can disable friend requests in the parental controls? I'd like to have manual control of that so I can turn it off completely 90% of the time and then only turn it back on when she tells me she has a friend from school or something that she wants to add. That would be great as well.

If you have parental controls on the account, they are highly restricted to words in the dictionary. I strongly recommend this for youths due to the restrictions on their chat and if they use a word out of the dictionary, we get an Arrr. Unfortunately at this time I dont think theres a way to turn off Friends requests.

To answer your other question. If I say something in local and I dont have the + sign when I type it, she cant hear/see it. If we say it in local and have the plus sign, the chat is restricted to words in the dictionary and she will be able to see/read it. Crew chat and guild chat is different. They can see/read anything even with the + sign gone. (I need to double check on that but I think thats how it is).

Thanks for the informative reply. I've seen several posts in the forum that mention the plus sign. But I'm having some difficulty visualizing what it is and how it works. Are you saying that you can simply type a plus sign in the chat window and then it bypasses the parental controls and lets the children see the local message? Or is it something else?

Thanks,

Michael
