I've read this several times, yet none of my BB experiences reflect this. I've tried it with 2(and no level 40s),3,4, and 5-12 pirates, and get firebrand from the second sets of bridges everytime. So im not sure that the number of pirates and thier notorieties makes that big a difference towards 'success'. Having also beat it with 2, and 5+ (never beat it with the 3 or 4.. fewer attempts).

I've found this to be very effective.

I have seen another approach, which surprised me when it worked.
The guy sailing sailed the ship straight up to the center bridge at the start, we couldnt even shoot the center bridge until we took the others out, then he turned slightly so we could take it out. Not sure why it worked, but we still won.

Everyone I am sure has little bits and differences on how they do it.
Last several days I did this quest several times testing different things out. So here is a little input .
Second set of bridges I would bet is just random. I saw both fire and regular canon balls with all variables the same.
I would recommend using full sail first on Goliath, so you can turn some. Then use take cover, and ramming. If you have just a little red left you can survive. (In a crew, and you are that close, make sure your crew doesn't shoot at Goliath while hitting full sail and getting out away from it)

Things I have seen work best.
Have people load there ammo before moving the ship to cut scene.
( At this point I would say lightning wins overall)
Idea is to sink frigates fast in a crew. Have power to right side or ready to move soon as frigates are down.
Soon as frigates die forts fire, be prepared to hit take cover, turn so right side can hit forts, open fire. I did best shooting right side than left solo.
Recharge.

In a crew have everyone on right side canons that you can get.
Don't fire on forts until they go active.

Second set, go through right side turn nose to left, hit take cover, open fire. I always hit left fort first, right through the hill.

Third set, same. Be sure ya get past the bridge beam so your upper canon doesn't hit the beam - ( yes I have done that, and cost me that round)

Last set, I tried several things but fast is best. Same thing, turn fast, take cover, open fire. Both forts will likely hit you here, take cover needs to be timed right. In crews I have seen many people switch to other side of ship here, and been successful.

Goliath I hit full sail, turned to the right a little while hitting take cover, ramming speed. Usually front canon will get a hit on ya.
In a crew should be a lot of hull left and can usually blast it with canons before it can sink ya.

Last stats I had for this were.
Full sail 1
Ramming 1
Open fire 1
Take cover 1
Thunderbolt 5
Barrage 4
Rapid Reload 5
Toughness 5

Take this how you want, good luck.
