It might be because "what we want" will never be a consensus. First priorities change with every pirate.
Some want ship customization. Others want bigger closets and more clothes. Still others want new weapons and skills. The hark and cry for the Kraken ("Release the Kraken!") has been heard for over a year now. Last year it seemed that all anyone was asking for was pets. But all of these "wants" have a common thread. They don't add anything to the story. I am sure that somewhere out there was a pirate whose primary desire was to have nicer looking caves. But after an hour we realized that while the caves may nice, it doesn't change the way the game is played. I don't want closets or clothes. Playing paper dolls bores me. As long as my ship floats, a fancy coat of paint is not important. Weapons and skills are cool but I am fine with what We have been given. The Kraken...what can be said that hasn't already been said. And pets? Well, this pirate doesn't need a helper monkey. So what DO we want? My vote is for new story content. Period. And I realize that all this build up is (most likely) a build up to a new story but even the invasions are getting kind of stale. |

Thanks for the reply Captain. MMO's typically do not have the level of individual story development as you are wanting to see. The code stream for that for every single player in the game would be ..... scary. You can get that from a one player console game because all they have to worry about is your character. MMO's have to be designed to handle many more player paths. They can do story archs on say character classes ( we dont' have that here) but again everyone who plays a wizard would follow that path. At some point all those Archs tie back to the main storyline and everyone is basically on the same page again but with different skill sets. Two Player characters interacting and created a questline is still out there I think as far as MMO's.
Grizzly made an excellent point earlier. I don't want this to be like other MMO's. You think you spend a lot of time lvling your weapons here LOL not even close. Imagine spending a week solid just killing monsters to get up a level. I am also glad we don't have to spend hours and hours harvesting ingredients to make our tonics and clothes and such. And thank you no cash shop!! Imagine those with the means buying 4x Rep bonus scrolls and uber weapons and such. These unbalance the play and divide the player base. One of the reasons I love this game is specifically for the lack of all this stuff. I can just get on the game and play!!! I don't have to block my time out and plan where/what I have to fight for the next two hours to advance my character. The developers have to weigh what to add and what will it add to the game. This is a business and they have to make money. They then try and deliver what the fan base wants based on ease of creation and story progression. They are moving forward and we are getting new stuff to do. I know not everyone enjoys what they are adding. I am sure the new storyline will come in time. my two cents - Captain Whale |

But all I'm saying is that a lot of us want the same things. And Disney should listen to the major wants. There are really only three. The kraken, ship customization, and a new chapter. I also agree that the invasions are just getting old. I've done it, so now what? I think they're just trying to keep us waiting for new things.

We do all want different things and I am sure Disney is keeping an eye on what its fans want. Whether it be here, in game or on other fansites, i'm sure they will be earwigging.
The 3 things you list Angel have all been mentioned at various GM events, so at some point they will arrive in the game. But that will be at the RIGHT time and not before. Personally I love the invasions. It's an excellent time to get good rep, level up those weapons and work together with other pirates who you may even become good friends with. Next will be the Tortugan Invasions(already on test), and it was also mentioned that Padres will have Jolly arriving there too! ( I think I have the chat logs somewhere hehe ), along with new clothes and new weapons (plural) So, more things coming to these shores soon. Remember, all good things come to those who wait. lol.I don't think POTCO will die off, especially with word of the new film. Peoples interest will be awakened again, and hopefully those who have taken a break (for whatever reason) will be tempted to its shores once again.

The Kraken. A big smelly squid. Fine. Now...tell me how it will fit into the story, the game play, etc. Asking for the Kraken is fine. But I think it needs to be outlined exactly how it fits into the game. Sailing is the one thing that POTCO has gotten spot on perfect, in my opinion. Changing it has been problematic at best. I am not sure they should "fix" what isn't broken. But I am keeping an open mind. If ship customization isn't about cosmetic improvements and is more about performance like cannons and armor and improved sails, then count me out. A new chapter? It is all about the new chapter. Period. Give us that ( and I believe that we are as close as ever on that one) and I will be happy enough to keep spending $10 a month. But they better make it soon. Star Trek online will be out in February. Thank you for this one Eliza. I agree 100% |

I just find it sad that D is allowing a game with such great potential to be so poorly managed!

I went through the long drought of 2008 when nothing - NOTHING... no updates, no fixes, NADA was coming out. Not even ANY RP events that you fair-weather players moan about...
To some above who have only been here the past few months, you have no idea what patience is. Most of 2008 was horribly dry for new material, but we found things to do to keep the game fun and entertaining. Many of the Guilds and pirates who have held on so long, UNDERSTAND that developing any material takes time. And let's be honest here, POTCO was rushed together for release between the 2nd and 3rd films to be used as a promotional tool. But, SINCE then - the team they have are making efforts, in particular just the past few months, to make the game better than ever and give it a future. I, for one, only have a real beef with developers not acknowledging that a majority of their long-time and PAYING customers are adults. Or at least old enough to quality physically. Check the release notes at Disney's site, quoted below in the spoiler tab, or the discussions in the News Archive (starting at page 5 working back up). Spoiler for Release Notes for 2008 (Descending):
This year has been mostly Disney redoing the game environment (story chapter, islands, caves) to what seems to be what they had intended before rushing the game out in Oct '07. The recent updates with the Invasions and Ghosts just seem a little out of whack - like it doesn't seem to be in the same game we knew. As far as GM events go, unless it's noted on their site / lore, I'm not really even considering them canon.

What is a "fair-weather player"? If I stop supporting my team because they are doing badly then I might be "fair-weather" but when money and time are involved, I think players have every right to be what you'd call "fair-weather."

It's funny. The OP on this thread is a full year old. The thread hadn't been posted in for almost 5 months, and someone went and revived it. Now it's causing a stir again. Why? Lack of content, IMO.
Now before anyone goes on about the new filler material being content, let me just say that I have been a paying customer since Day One. I waited six months for them to fix the Boss Battle, I waited and was thrilled when clothing and tatoo shops opened and we could get quests for them, LOVED the weapons quests....it was something new to do that took more than ten minutes. But none of it is content. Story Line Advancement is needed desperatly. Fair weather players?? The majority of players that have been around since the begining are gone. I understand being patient, and real content takes time. They have had time. I'm not going to pretend that all is just peachy keen in the pirate world and Disney is giving me my money's worth. It's not in this pirates opinion, and I have spoken with my wallet on this one. |

Aye, and I speak with my wallet ever year X 3. Have been playing since Feb 08 and still am having a blast. New content is here. Invasions are leading to that.

Sarah has touched on some of the things that I would want to say here. When I first posted this, a year ago, it was boredom and frustration at Disney's lack of new material. If you have an hour to go back and read 14 pages of posts, you will find that there were some really good points brought up then, and that most of those points are still valid today. Look back. There were tons of discussions then about the release of the game in the UK. Has that happened? The ads for the UK had ship customization in them. Has that happened? The game is over 2 years old now, and where and when is the next story chapter? Last year I wrote about all the people who had, or were, leaving the game. This fall has been another mass exodus. Players that I have been friends with for more than a year, and in some cases, almost 2 years, are barely ever on, are talking about not coming back, or have left entirely. Would this be happening if Disney had done more development of the main part of the game? The primary quest that you are given when you start a pirate is the Black Pearl quest. Every other quest is designed to help you get to the right weapons, skills, and strength in order to be able to defeat the Goliath and rescue the Pearl. The quest was always called Chapter 1. After 2 plus years, where is Chapter 2? I liken this to a book. If I were to start reading a book, and was totally intrigued by the exceptional writing style, the extraordinary story line, the fantastic charater development, and all of a sudden, the book just stops, I'd be really ticked! If the last page of the book just said, There's more, and it will be coming soon, I'd initially be upset, then I would go hound my local bookstore for the next volume. After 2 years though, with only teasers and brief descriptions of the story to come, and no continuation of the story, I'd give up. I'd tell people about it. I'd describe how there was this really great book that was never finished, and how I've waited more than 2 years for the next part. BUT, I'd also tell my friends to NOT bother buying or reading the book! This is exactly how Disney has treated the development of the game. They put out a very good initial cut. Yeah, it had bugs, and yeah they have had to go back and fix things. 6 months of not being able to do Boss Battles really put a bad taste in some pirate's mouths. I knew a lot of people who left as soon as they did their Boss Battles in March of '08. Then, in October and November last year, the mass exodus of players, just as their first year subscription wore out, was what prompted the OP of this thread. The amazing things is, we are seeing the same thing again this year. Yeah, this past year has seen the advent of the remade islands and caves, the introduction of the invasions, a weapons and notoriety cap increase that made the game something to do again, even if it just means grinding weapons. But in reality, grinding weapons is grinding weapons. The other major change in the game is the interactive events with the Disney GM's. But these are just sporadic and they are hard to be a part of. The masses of people that try to attend make them almost impossible to have any fun. Disney has dropped the ball here. They should have these things going on all the time. There should be GM's in game almost 24/7, and they should be accessible on all servers. There are many, many threads that give a lot of ideas and suggestions about things that could be done to the game. Things that would make the game more interesting. Things like: ship customization, larger storage, possible new ships and weapons. While these items might give us all something to do for a short period of time, they too would soon wear out. As Sarah said: Quote:
If you want to hear my real frustration, it's more the fact that quite a few of my long time friends are leaving. I blame this on Disney and their inability to introduce any content of magnitude. As I approach my 2nd anniversary of game play here, I look back at what the game was when I started, and what it is today. I see a lot of stuff that has changed, but I don't see anything that has added to the game overall. If I were to start a brand new pirate today, he could be fully mastered and completed of all the quests in the same amount of time as the one I started in July '08. (Which was my third.) Quite honestly, with all the rep that can be earned today form the new side quests and the invasions, I think a new pirate today could be fully mastered much faster than he could 2 years ago. So, what Disney has actually done has been to make the game easier to play and complete than what it used to be. And that's the real item here. You can COMPLETE this game. They haven't added to that. Once you reach a level that you have finished the quests, earned the weapons, maxed out your warship fleet and gold, taken back the Pearl, THERE IS NOTHING LEFT TO DO! This is the frustration of the players, and the reason why this thread even exists, and the reason why all the long itme players are leaving!
