after a week of waiting and 4 calls to tech support which offered no help i went looking into the old files here .. guess what i found. yup a fix. seems the last update messed up the api setting and it changed to default when it should have been pandadx9.
i want to thank chris and his post from june of 2008 for this fix. ) Go to Start | Run. 2) Type "Notepad" in the Open input box then click OK. 3) Add the following text precisely as you see it below: state working api pandadx9 4) Click File | Save As 5) Name the file "game_options.txt" 6) Save the file to C:\Program Files\Disney\Disney Online\PiratesOnline then launch the game |

Slightly expanded version of the above:
To specify Pirates Online to use DirectX 9 you will need to edit the "game_options.txt" file located in the PiratesOnline directory if you have ever saved settings in the Options Panel. 1) Go to Start | Programs | Accessories | Windows Explorer. 2) Navigate to C:\Program Files\Disney\Disney Online\PiratesOnline. 3) Double click on game_options.txt. 4) Make sure "state" has "working" on the line directly below it. If you see "attempted_working" change it to "working." 5) Under "api", please change the text from "default" to "pandadx9". 6) Save the file then launch the game. If you don't have this file on your computer, you will need to create one in the PiratesOnline directory. 1) Go to Start | Run. 2) Type "Notepad" in the Open input box then click OK. 3) Add the following text precisely as you see it below: state working api pandadx9 4) Click File | Save As 5) Name the file "game_options.txt" 6) Save the file to C:\Program Files\Disney\Disney Online\PiratesOnline then launch the game. These settings changes will instruct Pirates Online to only use DirectX 9 as the graphic API. |

i cant believe this. i was able to play a bit last night after doing the above fix. i just got home from work looking forward to sinking ships i log in. game updates. connecting screen comes up. little connect box goes away and it crashes. mutilpe times. i check the api instead of pandadx9 it shows pandagl along with a new notepad file above it called game_api i open it it shows pandagl. i change both to pandadx9 and save and make sure working is in state. crash again and again and again. i repeated the above steps a few times. anyone got a clue as to whats up.

i see they shut down for maintenance. i was in chat wih them for 3 hours and still cant get past login screen. i enter password . screen goes to windowed screen. once the little connecting icon that pops up in middle disappears it crashes arrrrrrrgh. i was less than socially acceptable with them in chat LOL. they said we have escalated this to our engineers. told em im sick and tired of hearing that. im about to escalate my credit cards right out of their system so he commped me 3 days. got a week yesterday from the billin dept. i have a feeling that their engineers are 2 or 3 trained chimps. reason i think that is it took em 6 days to not figure out the pandadx9 file was missing from the game logs i sent.. i just want to sink ships and plunder ..
--- EDIT: update didnt help still cant log in to the game. get to conncting screen and it crashes after connecting icon in center and little % bar on lower right disappear.

Can you post an Alt-PrintScrn of your "compatability" tab, for my curiosity, please? I don't have a vista-box handy, to check what the options you should have, are.
