Let's go down to the basics now. Enemy ships should be moving in huge fleets, surrounding Treasure/Merchant ships. The Shipwrights must give maps for which these fleets are travelling so that we can assault them.

ALL ships should have their HP increased massively. In other words, ships should not be sunk based on hull health, but based on various panels. The panels should break one by one, reducing the support of the ship. The ship can be reduced thus to a huge floating rubble.
At this rate battles would go on for long minutes (or even an hour), for which reward I will discuss soon enough.

An alternative method should be to board the ship and destroy the crew completely. All enemy ships should be made board able. Now, you should kill all the enemies within the hull.

The rewards now... Rewards should be HIGH - Gold, weapons, etc. If the ship isn't destroyed to flotsam and captured by killing all crew, then we should be able to take the ship wherever we like. All crew has to be killed. Ship damage should not be high if you want to take it.

Now with this, even player ships should be constructed in the same way. The ship doesn't sink completely if defeated, but should remain either broken or flotsam. We have to take the ship back to port where the shipwright should repair it in no time (on sea ship repair should not happen with extreme damage) and get the ship ready to battle. The repair money should cost alot this time, as ship defeats should be rare.

Now ships should be able to be pirated, and thus I'd like to stress my main point that I kept hidden from y'all. We should get all NEW classes of ships in the Shipwright. There should be Brigs, Vasas, Schooners, Xebecs, SotLs... all CUSTOMIZABLE.

The captured enemy ship will have the same stats as the enemy, but should be allowed to be customized.

What do you think? It is an updated version of my "Drastic Changes to Ship Combat" thread. I'd like to add that smoke and other earlier effects that were removed should be re-introduced. This may cause lag, but there is a very effective way they haven't realized, that will remove lag completely.
Yeah, you have many points. We should work together to make some ideas. I could see merchants wanting your help to fight off the Undead, Navy, and EITC for a price and certain other loot based on how much damage is done to the merchants ship. This would give you the chance to get both loot from sinking ships, and a bonus for keeping the cargo you were told to ship in good shape. The ship can be repaired, but the cargo should not be anything you can simply repair.

We should also get to see our enemies who are shooting at us from enemy cannons. That way we can kill them, and keep them from adding more damage to our ships. This is where Grape Shot could be more effective as well. So that you can ether hit multiple enemies on their ship, or to make them flee from their cannon. That is where the enemy personality system would be involved. You should be able to scare them, or take them out by choice. I also wish for some merchant sloops that can be boarded at sea without a hassle. You offer them gold for their loot, or can attack them, for a cost.

This cost could be something that changes the game forever, and be similar to the SvS 'Bounty' system. An Enemy AI Ship system that sends Medium-sized Navy Ships to come to your location and try to sink your ship. After you sink that wave, they could add a few EITC light ships, and eventually add in 3 or 4 Ship of the Lines when you gain enough of a 'Bounty'. For this type of sailing, I could hope for a new loot system add in that doesn't take up cargo space, but gives you weapons directly. This way you get credit for what level ships you ended up facing.
