I've got a somewhat Obsidian farm. All I did was start digging (was searching for Diamonds actually) and eventually I came to a huge pit of lava. I got a couple buckets full, brought it up to the surface, and made a little pool of it. You can use anything but wood or wool. Make a box shape with four blocks on each side, or if you're cheap like me, only two on each side. From there, pour one bucket of lava into one corner, and then another on the opposite side, and then the same with the other corners. Then, go fill one of the empty buckets with water. come back to your pool of lava, and this part is important. DON'T POUR DIRECTLY ON THE LAVA. That'll only give you Cobblestone. Pour it on whatever is keeping your lava together. After it flows over and creates the obsidian, scoop the water back up, mine the obsidian, and repeat. I was able to make a portal, and for those of you who have been to The Nether, you know that there is PLENTY of lava. So now I go through that portal, which happens to be next to the Obsidian farm. And lucky for me, there's a pool of water right next to it.
I can always post screenshots if you're confused and not quite sure.
