I think I know the answer to that one, but it isn't going to be what you'd want to hear. Personally, I think if they were ever going target adult gamers more specifically, then they would have launched the game as story/character rights that had been licensed to one of their game-making subsidiary companies (e.g. VR Studios presents Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean, putting the game makers out front).
The more they associated the game with the parent company's brand identity, the more likely it became that this game would be "imagineered" as one size fits all. Again, just as a personal observation, I think the release of this game was really just an attempted power-grab of some of the market share of the increasingly mainstreaming trends for MMOGs. To be honest, I think there was a dearth of pirate-themed games in that marketplace, however, I also think that one of the reasons that Disney launched so unexpectedly, was that they were concerned that they would lose ground to other pirate-themed games entering the marketplace around that time. So, as long as the advertising revenues are as expected, then I wouldn't expect Disney to re-target the game to another audience demographic. |

![]() Yes, I'm annoyed about the chat restrictions (Espically the Local Chat and players not seeing anything you type!). Yes, I understand it is Disney and why they have such restrictions (my little one I would not want to see direct foul language - she knows the words, and she knows to hold her tongue on using them). So when the idea of 'Adult' servers came up my first thoughs (posted earlier) would be the overhead of actual matenance - but - if they can make a "Seperate Welcome World" for beginner players - the first obstacle is already passed... the ability to actually create the "Adult Worlds" would just be a bit of extra coding. Though I still don't think gettting Adult Servers will ever fly (though I support this motion), for many other reasons listed here (proof of age, more staff requirements for monitoring, bunch listed in the thread) - the concept of the "world" itself now is within reach... Just thought I throw that tidbit in for the day

I don't think it's just a matter of knowing the words themselves. I know the words, and in the right situation I am perfectly happy to unleash them in streams that would make sailors and truckers blush; however, I don't think that contributes anything to the aesthetic of a persistent online world. It really just opens up local chat to young people learning to use the words unsupervised and in their proper contexts for the first time, and also people who only use an extremely limited vocabulary on a regular basis; I can't see either type of local chat increasing the enjoyment of the game for anyone else.
Personally, I could accept it just fine, but I would want to switch the normal condition to all local, non-speed chat being turned off, and manually switched on only for people whose text I want to see. I don't mind swearing, but I don't want to be treated to a continuous "low-brow serenade." |

These are not valid choices. Most games on the internet/pc market are not 100% kid friendly, and have warning labels regarding content, and gee most parents by them for thier kids anyways. Despite that, 100% kid friendly games are the loser games I see selling on the bargin bin at the computer store for $5-$10. Im for Disney creating a 100% Pirates of the Carribean game, that is fun for all ages. If they focus only on kids, it will be a loser. Besides, most kids arent PAYING For the game/service anyways. How many of ya'll save thier paper route money, or lawn mowing money, etc to pay for POTCO? Anyone? Zeppers lvl40 http://pirates.teamofx.us |

With that published warning, I don't see how you accuse Disney of hypocrisy or putting up a pretense. In fact, hypocrisy would be to complain about Disney not protecting kids, then encouraging people to "flood the Caribbean with misspelled obscenities and double entendres". And if you're being sarcastic about that, why did you list a bunch of examples? No system is perfect, and Disney hasn't claimed that theirs is perfect. There will always be people who try to push the filters to the limit. My suggestion: instead of complaining about it on a message board, report the players who act inappropriately. Click on them, then click the "Report" button. Simple enough. Everybody needs to do their part to keep the game as kid-safe as possible.

One thing I'd like to note. I understand everyone is upset, but let's just try to keep those filter bypassing names out of this site. I know we're a bit easy on what words we can and cannot say on here, but let's not think of every name in the book to post.
Keep in mind that we do have kids on this site as well. I just don't want it to get too messy on here. I'd rather not have to edit every post. ![]() But I do agree, they're not doing so great with the name filter.

Let me simplify my question, then:
why does Disney let things get through, like pirate names and guild names, when I would get suspended for saying the same things? |

I agree 1,000,000% with this. Disney doesn't need Computers vs. Brains, they need Brains vs. Brains...get it Big D(Disney)? Disney needs to put people in those monitoring chairs and really do something about it instead of sitting back and letting people break down the "Rated E 10+" barriers. There's my two cents. (Yes, I know about the "Game Experience May Change In Online Play", I play Xbox LIVE enough to know that...lol)
No offence to anybody, just speaking me even-thought-i'm-a-teenager-i'm-too-young-to-read-or-type-that mind.

If you lie about your age online its braking a binding contract and you can be sued if they ever find out when you check off the box that says i agree its like signing a contract saying you read the rules and everything you put in the registration is 100% true including your age
i dont like it when people lie about there age because they ruin everything for everyone and its obvuis there not that age bacouse of how they act. i hope they get caught when they lie about there age on any website. i persinaly can join any website play any game because im 18 so i dont care which way they go whith this whole parental stuff , but i hope they have a 18 and up server and people dont lie about there age, 18 and up server would be good because we can have mature conversations with out weird coments or questions |

The most aggrevating thing about the spell checker is the numbers, like when me and my friends are talking about skills and lvls and you cant type 2000 it makes no sense at all.

It is likely due to automated filters scanning 1000's of chat logs each day gets false positives. Guild name/Pirate name review I believe is a little less automated, with some although perhaps limited, human review/intervention/approval.
As for the what do you sue the kids for... Where are the parents that are supposed to be monitoring this childs internet activity? Its not the internets job, the parents are ultmately responsible, to what degree, the legal system would have to evaluate the situation accordingly. Oh I agree, however you know as well as I do that many many children have free reign of the internet much less things that happen on it. I mean maybe if parents would have more of a control on what their children do and who they talk to on the net, we wouldnt have as many "lets meet" internet predators having their way with our kids.
Yes alot of families are single parent families, or just too busy to watch every move with their kids. that one day when your kid dont come home and you have to take off time from work, contact the local authorities and start a missing child search, stressing to the max because "lollipop kid" decided it "was time to meet". these are things to have to worry about when you give your child free reign. This is what Disney hopes to stop. However all chat cant be monitored. As a matter of fact I was shocked to see what came through on local chat yesterday. Some basic lvl 6 pirate was poppin off obscenities and basically told me to F-off and go to He** when i told him chat like that is not allowed and enjoy 3 days vacation as I reported him. People like that get away with it yet "i need a beer" gets you suspended?!? Forgive me if this is jumbled, I'm tired and my pup woke me up for potty after 2 hrs sleep......back to bed for me.
