The Hobbit... Cancelled?

Yes. I am a movie fan and a huge Guillermo Del Toro fan and I was actually looking forward the to see the Hobbit movies. The man has vision and that is why Peter Jackson, director, producer, and writer of the LOTR trilogy and Hobbit producer and writer picked him. I just read that Del Toro has decided to step away from the director's chair because of the MGM mess. They are in bankruptcy putting the film in limbo along with the James Bond films. This MGM problem has prevented the film to even get green lit or approved. Del Toro and Jackson said that they had costumes, props, creatures, sets, animations, special fx, and even sequences ready. Both are writing the script for the film and will continue to do so. Jackson agreed with Del Toro's decision and said that his commitment to the film was amazing and that Del Toro had agreed to move to New Zealand and live there for 3 years, but the way things are going with MGM it might be for 6 years and Del Toro couldn't postpone other log term projects. Hopefully the studio can be bought by another studio like Universal or Sony. For now no more Hobbit or 007 in the near future. Although there are rumors of Hellboy 3. I would like to recommend to all of you a film called Los Ojos de Julia or Julia's Eyes produced by Del Toro and the guys that made The Orphanage. If you haven't seen The Orphanage then go watch it.

That's a bummer, I would like to see The Hobbit be made. Sounds like the right People are in on making it, I'm sure another studio will step in, as it was a fine book to read, and with today's CGI and other special effects tricks, can be a great movie.

MGM holds the movie rights. So no one can do anything about it until the whole studio is bought. They are selling out in a package. If they let go of important rights then no one would want them even less than they do. It's smart on their part. I was looking forward to those Hobbit films. They were going to be 2 films.

I read that it is being delayed rather than canceled. I imagine Jackson will not give up that easily and will find another director or do it himself. The delay is the reason Del Toro had to pull out because he has other obligations and cannot commit that much time to The Hobbit movies.

Hey for all of you LOTR fans check out this fan made short film called “The Hunt for Gollum”. It was made by a small independent group of film makers on a shoe string budget.
There’s another one called “Born of Hope” which is based on Aragorn’s parents.
Both short films are actually pretty good and can be viewed online for free.
Check them out if you haven’t already.

The film wasn't even approved for shooting. It never got the green light. Del Toro pulled out because he couldn't commit 6 years to those films instead of the 3 they planned. He is still writing the films with Jackson.
Regardless if its Jackson, Del Toro, or any other director the film cannot begin shooting unless MGM resolves their financial problems. They hold the rights so no other studio can make the films.
Bottom line is No Hobbit or 007 until MGM solves their money problem. Sony and Universal are the two studios that might buy MGM, but who knows.

I don't think that is a contradiction to what I said. I do believe the film(s) will be made
