Pirate Debate
Hmm, are there any debaters here on the forums? Either way, I want to host an in game debate competition. For those of you that don't know what debate is, its a form of formal arguing, where you have a topic, and then two sides: one for it, and one against it. The two sides will go through a timed group of speeches, in which they will try to prove to the judge that they're side is more convincing. The side that is more convincing wins the debate.
Anyway, I thought it would be fun to attempt an in game debate. I don't have any details yet, but if you are interested, please post to this thread. If I get enough people, I will post times and a topic. NOTE: There will be partners, who I will be choosing for you, so there are no arguments over who has who. If you absolutely cannot work with your partner, please PM me. List of Competitors: Crestshot (Kat Crestshot) The Skirata Clan (Some skirata.....) Chimera Doll (Chimera Doll) Jamesvsthekraken (James O'Martin) Muffin pirate (Rachel Somethin....) Captain Jason (Jason) Tuefanhandel (Nathaniel Warfury) Ropeburn (Rose Ropeburn) Last edited by Tiberius Fireskull; 10-26-2010 at 01:01 AM.. Reason: I'll be adding the competitors now. |

@TSC: We can work around it, there are many synonyms for words that we can use. And the topic will be about something in game, so that most words will be in dictionary. Thank you Crest! Your signed up!

Ok guys, I'll be taking one more person in. Now I will be posting all the details about the debate.
Resolution ("topic" for those that don't speak debatanese): The War Galleon is the best ship in the game. Now, what you are going to do with that topic, is you are going to find out several reasons as to why that resolution is true or false, sort of. If you are on the Affirmative side, then you will be talking about why the War Galleon is the best ship in the game. If you are Negative, you will talk about why it is not the best ship in the game. Simple enough? Yes? Good, lemme confuse you more! The way your case will work, is you will find two to three big ideas that support your side. Example, if I were on the pro side, I could say: The War Galleon is good for combat. Then I would go on to explain to the judge, me, why it is good for combat. I want you to find two to three of those. They are called contentions. Normally, there is a time limit for your speech, but its hard to do that, as we are typing rather than speaking, so I will time you based on how much stuff you tell us about. If you start to just ramble on and on, I will have to cut you off. Now, let me give you the speeches. 1) Constructive speeches. These are what I just explained to you, where you tell me all your main ideas and why you are right. Affirmative always goes first. 2) First speaker Crossfire: The first speakers, the people who said the constructive, will come forward and ask each other questions. Example: Neg side could say something like, "Do you know how many more people get sunken on War Galleons than War Frigates?" Or Pro could say "Would you agree that War Galleon's armor is better than a War Frigate's?" See what I'm saying? Its a time to try to crush your opponents arguments. Each side can ask three questions. During this time, only first speakers may speak. Second speakers saying anything during the first person crossfire will result in the team being disqualified. This includes whispers. 3) Rebuttals. Now the second speaker will come up. They will try to refute, as in counter, their opponents arguments. For example, pro side could say something like this: "Our opponents talk about how great the armor of a War Galleon is, but it has two thousand less hp than the War Frigate. Therefore, a War Frigate has better armor." You will try to crush your opponents arguments, but in a more speechlike form. 4) Second speaker Crossfire. Same as first person, just the second speakers are asking the questions. Again, first speakers may not speak, or the team will be disqualified. 5) Summary. Both sides' first speakers will give a speech, in which the debate is summed up, and each side shows why they should win the debate. 6) Grand Crossfire, my favorite. This can get chaotic. Both speakers now will have a crossfire. Same rules as other Xfires. 7) Final Focuses. An even shorter version of the summary. In this speach, given by the second speakers, is a speech about what the debate has boiled down to. Thats it! Whoever is more convincing to me wins! Now, debate courtesy and rules: - You MAY NOT cut your opponent off in mid speech, with the exception of crossfires. Interrupting your opponent in mid speech will result in your team's disqualification. - Formal dress if possible. If you are a basic member, I will allow you to wear what is available, but please try to look your best. - If you have a person randomly teleport to you, just tell us, and tell them to leave. - In the event of someone breaking connection, stop everything and wait for them to come back online. If they are not back after ten minutes, then the match will be postponed. - KEEP YOUR WEAPONS STOWED! If I so much as see you draw a weapon, I will mark you down, and that alone may make you lose the debate. - Be polite to your opponents. Rude behavior will not be tolerated, and it can lose you the debate. - What am I forgetting? It starts with an H and ends with AVE FUN..... I dunno, maybe it will come back to me... I think thats everything. Remember, I still have room for one more person, so post if you are interested. If you have any questions, post here or PM me. I will get back to you ASAP. |
